Your First Reformer Pilates Class in Ayr, and Why the Machine Is Less Terrifying Than It Looks
What happens, what to wear, whether you’ll survive it, and why people get completely hooked.

You book your first Reformer class feeling quite pleased with yourself.
Very organised. Very wellness. Very “this is me getting my life together”.
Then you walk into the studio, see the machine, and think…
Right.
Why does that bed have straps?
If you have never done Reformer Pilates before, it can look a bit intimidating. There are springs, ropes, a moving carriage, a footbar, and usually at least one person in lovely grip socks who appears to know exactly what they are doing.
Meanwhile, you are trying to work out whether you sit on it, stand on it, lie on it, or accidentally launch yourself across the room.
The good news is, nobody expects you to know.
That is what we are here for.
At Lunalove Ayr, we have loads of people coming to their first Reformer class every week. Some are excited, some are nervous, some have been thinking about booking for months and have finally talked themselves into it.
All normal.
And yes, you will survive.
What actually is a Reformer?
A Reformer is a Pilates machine with a moving carriage, springs for resistance, straps, and a footbar.
That sounds more complicated than it actually is.
Basically, it gives you support and resistance while you move, which means you can work on strength, control, mobility and posture in a really effective way.
You will probably also discover muscles you forgot you owned.
That is part of the fun.
Do I need to be fit before I come?
No.
And please do not wait until you are “fitter” before starting Pilates.
That is like saying you need to be good at French before taking a French lesson.
You come to learn.
You do not need to be flexible.
You do not need to be strong.
You do not need to understand the springs.
You do not need to look like someone who does Pilates.
You just need to turn up.
What should I wear?
Anything comfortable that you can move in.
Leggings, fitted joggers, a vest, T-shirt, sports top, whatever you feel good in.
Grip socks are ideal, mostly because they help with stability and stop you sliding about.
They also have the magical ability to make you feel about 40% more professional than you actually are.
What happens when I arrive?
First, do not worry about walking in and feeling lost.
We will show you where to go, help you get settled, explain the machine and talk you through what you need to know before class starts.
You are not going to be left standing beside a Reformer thinking, “Well, this is unfortunate.”
Your instructor will guide you through the class, explain the setup and give options where needed.
That is literally their job.
Will everyone else be better than me?
Some people might have been doing Reformer for longer, yes.
But honestly, nobody cares. We have the most amazing, suportive community!
Everyone is far too busy concentrating on their own springs, their own legs and whatever questionable life choices led them to the final ten pulses.
You are not there to keep up with the person beside you.
You are there to do your class at your level.
And one of the best things about Reformer is that the same exercise can often be adjusted depending on experience.
So beginners and regulars can both get a brilliant workout.
Will I be sore after?
Possibly.
You may discover muscles you were previously unaware had a speaking role.
The next morning, sitting down might become a slightly more considered activity.
You may also find yourself lowering yourself onto the toilet like you’re 87 and refusing to discuss why.
But it’s usually that satisfying kind of ache where you know you’ve actually done something.
And don’t worry, we’re not trying to ruin your life in your first class.
We would quite like you to come back.
Why do people get so hooked?
At first, you think it’s the Reformer.
Then you realise it’s not just the Reformer.
It’s getting stronger without really noticing when it happened. It’s finally nailing the exercise that used to make you question your life choices. It’s the post-class glow when you feel like you’ve done something good for yourself before the rest of life starts asking things of you again.
And then there’s the people.
You start recognising faces. You end up chatting before class. Someone saves you a space. Someone laughs with you when your legs start shaking. Before long, the person you used to awkwardly smile at across the studio has somehow become the person you’re grabbing coffee with after class.
That’s the bit nobody really tells you about.
You come for Pilates, but you end up with a routine, a little pocket of time that feels like yours, and sometimes a whole new group of people in your week.
And yes, you’ll probably also become deeply opinionated about your favourite Reformer, your favourite instructor, and a drawer full of pretty grip socks.
That’s usually when we know we’ve got you.
Welcome to Reformer Pilates.
